Every year there is much talk about whether those heading off for their annual skiing holiday should wear a helmet for added protection. In some resorts it is compulsory for children to wear a helmet, notably in Italy and Austria. Other popular destinations have decided against mandatory ski helmet wearing but in most places they are available for hire.

I was interested to read recently that despite suffering with amnesia, there are reports of people who continue to play music, not just by sight but from memory. There is a suggestion that music, in particular the skill of playing an instrument, is not simply a learnt behaviour. It is something that affects a different memory system and so when the brain is unable to remember the simplest of things, the ability to play music and remember lyrics remains.

One of the biggest stories in the past few weeks has concerned Thomas Cook and the news that it was seeking assistance from its banks to help service the company's £900m worth of debts. While it was unlikely the company would collapse completely, it was helped by a £200m bank loan and plans to sell off its 6% stake in NATS and some of its foreign interests.
