Dog owners beware!

Deborah Blackmore I heard on the news this morning that a consultation has been launched with regard to dogs acting out of control.  I understand that at the centre of the consultation is the dog owner's responsibility.  The suggestion is that a jail sentence is the appropriate penalty for owners who fail to control their dogs and thereby fail to act responsibly.

The interesting thing is that this consultation does not just relate to specific breeds, i.e. dangerous breeds, but to all dogs that deemed to be out of control.

I know there are always two sides to a story and I, myself, am a lover of man's best friend.  But I also act for a client who was recently injured as a result of a dog slipping its lead and attacking her own dog.  She got in the way.  The dog in question had a history.

Dogs are dogs.  They are animals.  But just like we know the character of our children, we also know the character of our animals.  We can all enjoy our pets, but it is up to us to be responsible for their behaviour.

I am not sure that a jail sentence is the appropriate penalty, but then again, perhaps it will make the minority of irresponsible owners think twice.
