Extreme Sports - Whatever next?!

Deborah Blackmore I was merrily driving home on Friday evening with Radio 2 on in the background when, during a regular Friday evening slot, a guest attracted my attention.  He was describing his sport over the radio for the purpose of raising its profile.  The idea of this regular slot is to publicise lesser known sports to the world at large.  The sport in question on this particular occasion?  Horse Boarding.

It seems that I must be rather naive, as this is the second sport recently that I had no idea existed!  However, on undertaking some further research, it has actually been around for some time.  I suppose one could argue it is a new take on Gladiator-style activities!

The idea is that those who are keen on scaring themselves half to death or, to put it another way, those who enjoy extreme adrenaline inducing sports, can hook themselves up to the back of a horse and ride on an off-road skateboard behind it.  I can see the fun, but I can also see the risk!  Apparently speeds of up to around 35 miles per hour can be achieved.

There are championships.  There are Clubs.  There are magazines!  There are also rules; lots of them.  There is also a regulatory body - the Extreme Horse Riding Association.

I haven't gone in to all the ins and outs of the sport yet, but it is obvious that there are risks to body and soul.  I have no doubt that the regulatory body ensures that the those running events comply with their duties to their competitor, etc.  However, competitor beware !  One important point of note is the issue of "volenti", i.e. CONSENT.  Don't forget, if you consent to partake in any obviously dangerous sport or activity, then you also consent to the risk.  On your head be it!

Personally, I think I'll decline on this one.
