Accident at work - injury to the eye

Mr B was working as a concrete operative and was scraping excess concrete from a mould when a piece of concrete flew into his eye. He had not been provided with proper eye protection.

Even though he immediately washed his eye, and the first aider did so as well, the few seconds that it took for him to get to the room where the first aid kit was kept and find the eye wash allowed the concrete to affect to surface of his eye. That allowed an infection to penetrate to surface of the eye which took several months to resolve.

He had to visit the eye hospital for months afterwards and was unable to drive. He had to pay out for prescriptions and taxis. He missed out on 2 motorcycle track days which he had booked and paid for.

Outcome of the claim:

It was accepted that his employers were at fault . Thankfully there was  no long term damage to his eye and settlement of his claim has now been agreed at £6000 in total.
