Gosport War Memorial Inquest – update from Blake Lapthorn
Mon 16th May 2011 Clinical negligence
On Thursday 12 May 2011 a pre-inquest hearing took place in the Guildhall before HM Coroner for Portsmouth, Mr David Horsley. The hearing considered the case of Mrs Gladys Richards (deceased) who died at the Gosport War Memorial hospital in August 1998 whilst under the care of Dr Jane Barton.
It was this case that initiated the original investigation by Hampshire Constabulary into an excess of deaths at the hospital. Mrs Gillian MacKenzie, daughter of the late Mrs Richards, is pursuing the case for justice for her mother.
Representing Mrs MacKenzie at the hearing was her solicitor, Mr John White from Blake Lapthorn and her barrister, Mr James Mehigan, of Took's chambers. Also in the hearing were representatives for Dr Barton, for the nursing staff and for the hospital's management.
It has been decided that the inquest into the late Mrs Richards' death will now take place in the autumn of 2011 and it is expected to take two weeks.
Mr Horsely will be sitting without a jury and the hearing will be in public taking place in Court in Portsmouth.
