Nerve damage

Often the work of the Clinical Negligence team at Blake Lapthorn solicitors includes compensation claims for catastrophic injuries affecting the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nerve injuries can also be devastating. These types of personal injury claims may arise from medical accidents and involve loss of motor function, or chronic pain with abnormal sensation.

If you have suffered nerve damage in the course of your medical treatment, we have the expertise and determination to establish whether you suffered medical negligence, and to pursue your claim for compensation.

There are a variety of nerve injuries that can lead to a medical negligence compensation claim including:

  • cauda equina syndrome injuring the nerves which supply muscles of the legs, buttocks, bladder, bowel and genitals
  • femoral nerve injury affecting the thigh muscles and usually severely impairing mobility, as well as giving rise to chronic pain in some instances
  • perineal nerve injury during surgery or obstetric procedures causing foot drop
  • radial nerve injury impairing function in the muscles of the arm
  • ulnar nerve injury affecting the function of the hand
  • damage to the sensory nerves of the chest wall, resulting in areas of chronically altered sensation and pain

Typically these types of injury might occur as a result of:

  • positioning a patient with insufficient care whilst under general or regional anaesthesia
  • intra-operative trauma to nerves, either by direct injury, retraction, stretching, electrical diathermy, suturing or cutting
  • nterventional radiological techniques of investigating joints and arteries giving rise to complications
