Noise induced hearing loss

Please click on the link if you would like to download our Client's guide to Noise Induced Hearing Loss.

In 1963 the Government confirmed that noise in the workplace could cause hearing loss and tinnitus.  Since this date employers have had a legal duty to access and monitor the level of noise in the workplace and to protect their employees from excessive exposure.  Where the noise was assessed as being excessive they have been required to take reasonable steps to reduce the noise levels.  Where this has not proved possible they have been required to provide and enforce the wearing of hearing protection.

Many employers have failed to follow the Government guidance relating to noise at work resulting in employees having their hearing damaged by their employment.

If you have operated noisy machinery or have been in the vinicty of others operating noisy machinery and the noise you were exposed to was so loud that you had to shout to make yourself heard then the likelyhood is that your hearing was damaged by your employment. There are four types of industrial deafness;

Temporary hearing loss caused by several hours exposure to sounds and noises about 75db.  The hearing loss should return to normal after a prolonged period in a quiet environment, however exposure to noise and regular periods of temporary hearing loss can often lead to permanent hearing loss.

Permanent hearing loss caused by constant exposure to excessive noise.
Acoustic trauma caused by exposure to a single or series of very loud noises.  The hearing is affected and exposure can lead to a perforated ear drum.

Tinnitus caused by exposure to excessive noise.  Tinnitus is a ringing, buzzing or whistling type sound in one or both ears.  It can be temporary or permanent. If you are suffering from hearing loss and you have worked in a noisy environment you may have noise induced hearing loss caused by your employment and you may be entitled to compensation.
