Mrs G underwent a repair of an umbilical hernia at Epsom & St Helier Hospital on 8 September 2009. Following the operation it was noted that there was a large area of damaged skin, which was covered by a pressure dressing. Mrs G recalls being in severe pain when she came round from the operation and feeling a burning pain on her stomach as though someone had poured hot water on it.
No explanation was given to Mrs G and she was discharged home that day. The following day she noticed clear fluid leaking from the wound. She attended her GP who recorded that she was in a lot of pain and when he removed the dressing, he noted a line of blisters on each side of the abdomen. At a review appointment on 23 November 2009, the consultant noted that the burn had developed at the time of the surgery or afterwards. The burn wound healed but Mrs G was left with a scar.
Blake Lapthorn obtained £8,500 in compensation for Mrs G.
