Mr G visited his GP complaining of cramping abdominal pain on a Friday, which had graduated from his upper abdomen to his right side over the previous two days and was worse on movement. He had a loss of appetite and was constipated but had not vomited. Mr G was diagnosed with a gastro intestinal infection and he was sent back home.
Mr G's condition worsened over the weekend. He returned to his GP Practice on the Monday and was diagnosed with appendicitis. He was referred to hospital immediately and had surgery in the early hours of the following day. As a result of the delay in diagnosis he underwent an appendicectomy and a hemicolectomy; resection of the colon. Further to that extended procedure Mr G had a protracted recovery, developed dietary issues and exacerbated back pain. However, the dietary issues were manageable and the back pain was felt to be an exacerbation of a pre-existing condition.
The Claimant alleges that if he had been diagnosed correctly during his first visit at the GP Practice he would have been referred to hospital earlier and had an early laparoscopic procedure. Following that he would have avoided the extended operation and other problems specified above.
Mr G instructed our Clinical Negligence team, known for their in-house medical expertise, in December 2010. Our Solicitor and ex nurse, Patricia Wakeford managed this case throughout. Despite strong expert evidence liability was fully denied and early settlement offers were ignored by the Defendant's representative. This case was concluded at Trial and our Client was awarded compensation for his injuries in the amount of £8755.00.
