In May 2013 Mr F had cataract surgery to his left eye at his local hospital in Hampshire. He recovered from the surgery but noticed that his vision had deteriorated. He informed hospital staff of his poor vision but was advised that this was normal after cataract surgery and would improve in time.
Mr F was subsequently contacted by the Hospital Trust following an internal investigation into the cataract operations performed on the day that Mr F had surgery. The Trust had noted that Mr F was not the only patient to suffer vision problems after having cataract operations performed by the same surgeon. The Trust investigation discovered that the surgeon had injected an antibiotic at a dose prepared for injection into the white of the eye but instead injected directly into the eye. This caused retinal toxicity and visual loss.
As a result of the wrongful injection Mr F lost virtually all of the sight in his right eye and his left eye was already compromised due to glaucoma. This reduction in vision meant that Mr F was unable to drive, clean his house, and partake in his hobbies of DIY, gardening and woodwork.
Mr F contacted BL Claims Solicitors as specialist clinical negligence solicitors. The hospital Trust admitted liability and Mr F accepted £45,000 in full and final settlement of his claim.
