Since 2006 Mrs C had been a regular attender at her NHS dentist based in Gosport, Hampshire. She attended for regular six monthly reviews. At each review her dentist recorded that Mrs C's teeth were in good condition and no treatment was required.

In around 2008 Mrs C spoke to her dentist because she was concerned about a gap that had appeared between her top front teeth.  At each review she also reported to him that her gums bled when brushed and she had generalised tooth ache. The dentist did not seem concerned by these symptoms and suggested that she see an orthodontist. Mrs C continued to raise her concerns at each appointment she attended.

By November 2012 Mrs C was increasingly concerned that the gap in her teeth was becoming larger.  She saw an orthodontist in Bournemouth who diagnosed her with severe aggressive periodontitis (gum disease) and informed Mrs C that the long term prognosis for her teeth was poor. Further investigation revealed that as a result of the aggressive gum disease she had developed severe bone loss and would likely loose many teeth over the coming years.

Mrs C started private treatment to treat and manage her gum disease which included deep cleaning under local anaesthetic and subsequent orthodontic treatment with braces. She is likely to need expensive restorative dental treatment in the future for the rest of her life.

Mrs C was very distressed with her diagnosis after many years of regular dental check-ups and contacted BL Claims solicitors as specialist clinical negligence solicitors. Following negotiations with the dentist's defence union Mrs C agreed to accept £25,000 in full and final settlement of her claim.
