There is a waste transfer site close to residential homes  in Ivor Close, Holbury. The Echo's report tells that local residents are concerned about coming into contact with asbestos fibres.  The article reports that the transfer site ensures the asbestos it removes is double bagged, using industrial strength material, before being taken to the site where it  is disposed of in an appropriate manner.

I am pleased to read that the staff at this site wear protective clothing when handling the bags.  However, the local residents remain concerned about their proximity to asbestos fibres,  although not working directly with the asbestos themselves,  and I am not surprised. There are more and more cases coming to light of individuals who have not worked with asbestos directly but have been exposed indirectly . For example, through washing the overalls of husbands who worked with asbestos or being a child in a household where the father worked with asbestos. Both are examples of individuals who, in later years, contracted diseases such as Mesothelioma,  the only known cause of which is asbestos exposure.
