The Sunbed (Regulation) Act 2010 was introduced following research that showed more than a quarter of a million children aged 11-17 in England were using sunbeds to get a tan. In Liverpool and Sunderland, over 50% of 15-17 year olds use sunbeds. Recent research carried out by Cancer Research UK has shown that more than two people under the age of 35 are diagnosed with malignant melanoma every day. The BBC reported that firms will face fines if they don't comply with the regulations.

The new Act allows for licenses to be revoked or up to a £20,000 fine to be handed out to those businesses who are allowing under 18's to use their machines. The Act doesn't, however, require businesses to ID customers or keep a record of them, and this could be the downfall. Although it is a positive move by the government to tackle the health risks, there is still more that needs to be done.

Of course we all love the look of that golden tan, but with skin cancer on the up, I think a fake bake is definitely the way forward.

If you have any concerns regarding skin cancer, request an appointment with your GP urgently.
