has been developed to be used in making car bonnets which absorbs the energy of a collision better than metal and will reduce the severity of head injuries when pedestrians/cyclists hit the bonnet as a result of road traffic accidents

When a car stikes a pedestrian it is usually in the upper leg which in turn causes the pedestrian to bend over the bonnet striking his/her head which is when the head injury occurs, unlike cyclists, pedestrians do not wear protective head gear.
The most common injury with a cyclist/pedestrian is a head injury and these can go unnoticed as there is not always an injury to see.  The clues in detecting a head injury are loss of consciousness, unable to remember the accident, loss of memory which can  be subtle, change of mood or characteristic and where the impact is severe it will result in a fatality.
This new development cannot come too soon and should lower both the severity of the impact and hopefully the fatality rate in these type of injuries.

Julie Donovan is a Legal Executive in the Personal Injury team.
