In the last 10 days two farmers have died on their farms.  Statistics show that hundreds are  killed or seriously injured every year in the industry.  In 2009/10 38 people were killed and 640 were injured.

The HSE stated that less people are working in the farming industry but the statistics for death and injury are not improving.  Dangers include limbs trapped in machinery or at this time of year a particular problem is livestock. During the calfing season, normal docile cows can become aggressive when they or their calf's feel threatened.

Safety measures are therefore being taken very seriously in the agricultural industry to improve its safety record with the HSE introducing a new training course.  In addition the NFU have launched the Make a  Promise Campaign which intends to raise safety awareness. The aim of this campaign is for farmers to promise not only to go out to work but more importantly to come home.

As someone who has acted for many farmers and farm workers who have been injured whilst at work, I know that the smallest mistake can have very costly consequences.
