Research by the RNLI shows although 98 per cent of pleasure sailors carried a lifejacket, only 49 per cent wore them while they were afloat. In addition, a third of lifejackets seen by sea safety volunteers would fail to work due to poor maintenance.

The clinic was led by Dave Wright, safety officer at Cowes Lifeboat Station and his counterpart at Yarmouth Lifeboat Station, Andy White.  Dave said: "Just like smoke alarms in the home and seat belts in the car, a properly selected, fitted and maintained lifejacket should be a must for all pleasure sailors."

As a point of interest, did you know that if you were injured at sea, the limitation period is only 2 years from date of accident rather than the normal 3 year limitation period for an accident on land.

Claire Howard is a Partner in the Personal Injury team.
