This story shows that the cause of death or illness can never be taken at face value. Those delving further into the cause of Sarah Carter's death in Chiang Mai, Thailand have found the hotel could have been using a powerful chemical insecticide (chlorpyrifos) to kill bed bugs and other unwanted pests.

The chemical is banned in some countries for use in domestic situations.  The difficulty with a country like Thailand is the lack of resources or will of the authorities to detect the use of potentially harmful chemicals and then take enforcement action.  For more, see details of the investigation by 60 Minutes.

Unfortunately, this tragic case only serves to highlight the fact that when abroad Brits can only expect hotels to comply with local standards, even if they can be potentially harmful and unacceptably dangerous.  Sometimes, this is all part of the fun of travelling.  Other times, as in the sad case of Sarah Carter, it can be a source of great pain, anguish and frustration.
