The horse is reported to have been hit from behind by a car, and was killed as a result. The rider suffered a broken leg and is clearly traumatised by the awful event.

This is a popular time of year for horses and riders to get out in the light evenings and good weather and enjoy a hack. Unfortunately there are just not enough bridleways to enable most riders to avoid riding on the roads, as much as they might love to. Where cars and horses come into conflict, sadly the horse and rider will always come off worse.

There are lots of ways in which a rider can help to make themselves more visible to car drivers and so be safer on the roads. Fluorescent clothing for the horse and rider is available from all good saddleries. The British House Society has lots of information available on their website, and they also ask that you notify them of accidents on the road involving horses so that they can collect data which is not otherwise collected - http://www.horseaccidents.org.uk/
