The bike helmet idea is inspired by T.H.U.M.S. (Total HUman Model for Safety) technology--a piece of simulation software that Toyota uses to measure injury to body parts that can't be detected using conventional crash test dummies.  The idea is that if you are involved in an accident and no one stops or indeed if no one is around when you are injured, the helmet detects the traumatic head injury and notifies emergency services.

The idea is being developed by engineers from Deeplocal and Carnegie Mellon University, in the US.  The current stumbling block is cost. The prototype circuit boards cost $800 a pop, but the developers hope that the price may drop to $30 to $40 a board by the time the helmet is ready for market.

What a great idea this is.  Not all accidents happen when people are around to call emergency services. Many are injured by hit and run drivers or indeed many accidents do not involve another vehicle or person.  Cyclists are hit potholes, run into kerbs or if off road, hit tree stumps.  If no one is around to call 999 vital time might be lost.  Lets hope this succeeds and becomes affordable.
