The horse had been confined to the stable due to injury and he was letting it into a field for some grass.  Anyone who knows horses will understand how unpredictable they can be in a situation like that, full of pent up energy.  It appears that when he tried to catch the horse again and lead it back to the stable, he was kicked in the face.

Employers in the Equestrian Industry have the same responsibilities for the health and safety of their employees as any other employer.  They need to carry out the same risk assessments of any other employer and take reasonable steps to keep their employees safe at work.  Whilst this can be difficult because of the sometimes unpredictable nature of animals including horses, this does not mean that they can ignore their responsibilities.

Mr Gorleston is now paralysed from the chest down and seeking substantial damages from his employer as a result of this horrendous accident.

For my information about accidents at work or accidents involving horses and other animals see our articles.
