The blast destroyed part of one of the most powerful electricity staions on Cyprus, Vasilikos, and has caused widespread power cuts. The Cypriot electricity authority has warned that the plant will not immediately come back online.
Whilst the explosion will not affect any British holidaymakers directly, British citizens travelling to Cyprus should be aware that the country of Cyprus is in state mourning for 3 days and that electricity cuts will be likely for some time.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has warned that "the Limassol motorway is closed and travel in the area is likely to be difficult for at least the next few days. The damage to the power station is impacting on the island’s electricity supplies, resulting in a number of power cuts. Air quality in the affected area is reported to be poor, due to the clouds of smoke caused by the explosion... The overall level of the advice has not changed; there are no travel restrictions in place in this travel advice for Cyprus."
