The new rules, which only apply to motorways and trunk roads, are that only potholes more than 4cm deep or 15cm wide will be repaired urgently.

The change comes into effect in the West Country later this year and will be rolled out nationally by 2015.  The rules mirror those rules already in place on minor roads.

The Association of British Drivers have condemned the new rules as dangerous and irresponsible.  A pothole 4cm deep is a big hole.  My concern is that once a pothole has become established, and especially on a motorway, with lorries constantly driving over them it will not take long for the pothole to expand and this could cause accidents if drivers lose control over them.
