If you have travelled with an EU based airline you have the following rights:

-- Re-routing or a refund where the delay is over five hours. The airline must cover the cost of any transfers to alternative airports, and

-- Where a flight is delayed for over two hours, customers are entitled to free meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation if appropriate and access to a telephone or other communication such as email or fax. This protection is only likely to apply to those who were already at the airport when the situation arose, hence the advice not to travel to the airport before contacting your airline.

The usual rules for fixed financial compensation are unlikely to apply given the 'extraordinary' nature of the Hurricane.

If you have travelled with a non EU airline your rights will be more limited but will include the right to a refund or re-routing in accordance with the airline's terms and conditions of carriage.  Each individual airline's terms and conditions of carriage will also govern the right to additional compensation.  Airlines should offer a similar care package to that required under the EU Regulations where there is flight cancellation or delay but they are not obliged to do so.
