The report found that 'the work of generalists is essential to healthcare' and recommended that 'GP specialist training be extended from three to five years.' It seems that young doctors have favoured training in specialist areas, rather than choosing to take a generalist approach which could be vital in practice.

Baroness Finlay, the Commission's chair, has stated that "the first point of contact for a sick child should be a GP with appropriate training, but only half of GPs have paediatric training." It is not difficult for one to see the potential repercussions of this and it would be interesting to see how many healthcare problems would be detected at an earlier stage, if a generalist approach to training was taken.

It is stated that 'more of the most talented doctors must be encouraged to make careers as generalists rather than specialists.' This seems to suggest that the emphasis in the past has been on specialism, with generalism being viewed as more of a last resort.

The Commission has further called for a 'new model' in healthcare 'to provide care for patients who need more intensive support than they receive from existing systems. For example care homes should have dedicated GP services.' Given the recent news reports into the standard of care in care homes, this is a move that should be embraced. Credit should be given however to the care homes where this service has already been put in place.
