This is what happened following two accidents  at a major European food business producing raw and prepared chicken products.

The first incident involved  an employee's cleaning equipment. A safety guard had been removed which resulted in his hand being pulled into two rotating cogs and crushed resulting in him loosing his hand.

The second accident happened just one month later. An employee tried to clear a blockage in the system and his arm became trapped and broken.  The Health and Safety Executive successfully brought a prosecution against the company at the Norwich Crown Court and the company was fined £230,000.00.

Both of these accidents could and should have been avoided if proper training had been given, adequate risk assessments had been undertaken, and safe working practices, including stopping access to dangerous equipment, had been followed.

A good outcome for the Health and Safety Executive, but a poor outcome for the employees who suffered the injuries.
