The story follows a warning by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) that those injured in an accident or found responsible for causing one 'may face bills of thousands of pounds'.  In my experience, most home building and contents policies provide public liability cover at home or away of a minimum of £5million.  Check the wording of your policy and if you are unsure, call your insurer.  Also, I for one have theft cover for my roadbike as part of my home contents cover.  I would be happy to pay a few pounds extra for accident insurance.  The report says these typically cost £30-£40 per year.  I think that's too expensive.

Accident and injury insurance that pays out a percentage of your income should you be absent from work on account of injury is a common method of protection.  However, the premiums are steep and few can afford them.

Given the rise in cycle use (the Department of Transport says 20% higher than in the 80's) this is sound advice; but can individuals afford it?  Perhaps the ABI could take the lead in this and provide cycle cover as standard or at small cost, with home and/or car insurance? That way, aren't insurers in a win-win situation?

Your thoughts please.
