Austria is reported to have seen more snow this January than any other in the last 30 years.

Diane Evans has highlighted some tips for staying safe while skiing in this article which I would echo. They include a mix of common sense and some useful pointers, particularly for those who do not ski regularly:

-- Watch weather and snow reports and get a piste map
-- Take note of where you are and warning signs
-- Wear a helmet, go off piste with a guide and carry a transceiver, probe and shovel (if you dare to venture off piste at all that is!)
-- Check out the FIS (International Ski Federation) rules for ski and snowboard conduct
-- Learn from the experts with local knowledge – book a lesson

If you are injured in a skiing accident, make sure you seek specialist advice from an expert solicitor.  While skiing accidents are often labelled "road traffic accidents on the snow" they can involve complicated issues of international law.
