The motorcyclist Vincent Ringe, then aged 33, suffered multiple broken bones, a fractured skull and a brain haemorrhage when his motorbike ran into the side of a van owned by Slough-based company Eden Springs (UK) Ltd. He spent six months in hospital, undergoing almost 40 operations, and has been left significantly disabled and unable to work.

Judge David Pittaway QC said Ringe was probably doing 60-70mph on his Yamaha when the accident happened on a busy road in Enfield, north London which at the time had a 40mph speed limit.  For that he bore 'considerable responsibility' for his own misfortune but he went on to rule that the van driver had also been negligent in moving out into the main road without first allowing an articulated lorry to pass and when his view to the right was obscured.

Even after an 80% reduction to his damages, the severity of his injuries means that Ringe is still likely to be awarded a six-figure sum.

My comments are that we need to all just slow down and take extra care on the roads.
