I was therefore interested to read in the Daily Echo of the breakthrough local campaigners have achieved in the fight for a cycleway on a busy road where two people have already sadly died.

Hampshire County Councillor David Harrison has revealed that businesses have offered to cut the cost of a cycle route between Totton and Marchwood by providing money, materials and equipment. Cyclist Gary Lewis was killed in an accident with a lorry at Jacobs Gutter Lane in 2009.  Gary's accident occurred just yards from where Stephen Tippetts died following a moped accident three months earlier.

Marchwood is surrounded by narrow country roads that are being used by an increasing traffic flow of HGV's.  Local villagers have spent years campaigning for a cycleway but the cost has been estimated at £300,000.00.  I think it is a show of character and local community that businesses in the area are willing to do all they can to ensure their local roads are safe for our cyclists.
