A week in Majorca is £264 cheaper than a week in Devon, according to Thomas Cook.

This news was reported shortly before Thomas Cook announced its bookings were down by some 33%.  The slump is largely due to the widely publicised problems the tour operator has experienced in recent times.  It also shows that consumers do worry about whether their money and holiday will be secure in the event of a tour operator collapsing.

It remains to be seen whether what is essentially a marketing drive dressed up as statistical research by one of the country's largest tour operators will boost the uptake of holidays abroad. To many, Thomas Cook's findings will not come as a surprise.  We all know how expensive it is to live in Britain day to day compared with many other countries.  But holidaying abroad can be just as costly, depending on where you go and what you do.

First Choice now exclusively offers all inclusive holidays which can give consumers some of the best value for money.  Perhaps this is where there are savings to be made. Most importantly, if you are planning on heading abroad this year, try and make sure your holiday is ATOL protected and that you will be covered by the Package Travel Regulations if things go wrong.

While so-called dynamic packages may be a cheaper option, if things do go wrong such bookings very quickly become a false economy. If you place a booking with Thomas Cook, generally speaking there will be little doubt it is a traditional package which is fully protected in the highly unlikely event the tour operator does go bust.
