A local inquest has found that exposure to asbestos was the cause of death of a local retired police officer.

The individual had received an out of court settlement last year from Hampshire Constabulary for more than £500 000.00 without fault being accepted by them. The inquest that was presided by Deputy Coroner for Hampshire, Simon Burge heard that the deceased had worked for Hampshire Police from 1968 until 2000 and had passed away from mesothelioma in October 2011.

The inquest heard extracts from the deceased statement in which he calculated that he had attended 37 fires including ones at houses, hay barns and industrial buildings and believed that he came into contact with asbestos during this time. He was not provided with any breathing apparatus of masks. A verdict of death due to industrial disease was recorded.
