TripAdvisor rebuked by Advertising Standards Authority

In interesting news, the BBC has reported that the Advertising Standards Authority said that the US-based firm TripAdvisor's no longer carries the word 'trust'.

Two hotels and the online reputation firm Kwikchex, which represented others, had apparently complained that the claims were misleading.

The BBC further reports that "the tripadvisor.co.uk homepage now contains no reference to the word "trust" and simply describes itself as "the world's largest travel site."

In an ironic twist, as the ASA has no jurisdiction over international sites the international tripadvisor.com address - which is accessible in the UK - continues to describe its content as the "world's most trusted travel advice" and "you'll find real hotel reviews you can trust".

This is an interesting decision, amid a growing recognition by the hotel industry of the importance of such website review sites to hotels. No doubt big hotel chains will give some thought to providing their own reviews or becoming part of alternative review-led website systems in the future.
