The NHS has offered to remove and replace the implants in all patients who received their original surgery on the NHS. Where women had surgery performed at a private clinic, and that clinic is refusing to see patients or remove the PIP implants, the NHS has offered to remove the implants if there is a medical need (including distress) at no cost to the patient, but will not replace them.

The figures released today reveal the following in relation to women who originally had private surgery with PIP implants:

- The NHS has received over 2,860 referrals to date;

- These have been dealt with by 115 NHS Trusts;

- Over 1100 scans have been performed; and

 - 67 women have elected to have the implants removed.

Additional statistics relating to patients who were initially treated on the NHS, including women who have had implants following a mastectomy, reveal that a number of these women have also elected to have the PIP implants removed.

This clearly places an additional burden on the NHS at a time when funding is subject to very strict control. I believe that the women who are concerned about having PIP implants have a right of redress against the private clinics that treated them initially.
