This is illegal and is causing interference with critical systems which rely on GPS systems to track and navigate aircraft and shipping as well as interference experienced by Ordnance Survey equipment and also to track vehicles carrying valuable loads.

In one incident at Newark Airport in the US they were suffering repeated interference to the GPS system being used which was eventually traced back to a truck driver using a GPS jammer.

The Sentinel research project used twenty roadside monitors to detect jammer use and it is believed there are between 50 and 450 occurrences in the UK every day where GPS jammers are being used.

GPS jammers are widely available online and Bob Cockshott of the ICT Knowledge Transfer Network believes the law around jammers being used needs tightening and the Sentinel project should now work towards developing systems that can be used for enforcement so that the jammer in use can be traced back to the driver using it.
