Thomas Cook enjoyed the best average improvement in delays and flight times with Monarch touching down in third place.It certainly seems these airlines have something to shout about; perhaps they'll adopt the Ryanair approach of blasting passengers with a fanfare when a flight lands on time. If they do, let's hope the fanfare is not abused - I have experienced Ryanair flights where the fanfare was played as a matter of routine even though the flight was over an hour late!

Generally, only a previous bad experience will influence the decision consumers make when booking their next summer holiday. These figures may offer some food for thought as you browse the internet and deliberate over brochures for the best deal.

Remember, if your flight is delayed or cancelled then you are entitled to care and assistance from the airline. This includes:-

-- Meals and refreshments;

-- Access to a means of communication (telephone, fax or email);

-- Hotel accommodation for an overnight delay or a delay of more than 5 hours.

In the case of a flight cancellation you are also entitled to fixed compensation under the Denied Boarding Regulations.

These rules apply to flights with an EU based airline or where the outbound flight is from an EU country. Care and assistance should be provided, regardless of whether the delay is outside of the airline's control.
