Uninsured drivers are responsible for dozens of deaths and thousands of injuries each year on our roads.

Most petrol stations use a camera system to pre-authorise the use of its pumps.  Once you have parked up, a camera automatically registers your number plate and only then is the pump activated for use. The idea there is that should you drive off without paying, you can be traced using the vehicle number plate.

The government is looking at whether the information can instantaneously be sent to the Motor Insurers Database and the DVLA to check whether the vehicle is taxed and insured and if it is not, the pump will not be activated, and the police notified.

There are pro's and cons to this idea:

1.    Cost - who pays for this system?  The taxpayer or road user?  I don't see the oil company shelling out

2.    The safety of petrol station attendants.  Who is responsible for their safety should an irate driver appear on the scene?
