It is generally recommended that you should try to get 8 hours of sleep a night, however many experts advise that the amount of sleep you need a night varies from individual to individual and depends on a number of lifestyle and other factors. It was reported that Margaret Thatcher only needed five hours sleep a night!

Generally if you are tired and struggling to stay awake throughout the day this may be an indication that you are not getting enough sleep. However, if you feel excessively sleepy during the day and you snore extremely loudly, with regular pauses and gasps, you may be suffering from sleep apnoea, one of the commonest sleep conditions in Britain.

Obstructive sleep apnoea causes breathing to be interrupted during sleep which leads to lack of oxygen, restless sleep and heavy snoring.

Personally, I find that if I have too much sleep (on that rare occasion!) I wake up lacking energy, and certainly do not feel like I have benefitted from a few extra hours sleep. Having said that though, I think I am someone who needs their 7 or 8 hours a night!
