By examining the genetic make-up of the sample, scientists were able to identify 10 separate sub-types of tumour based on the likely clinical outcome including whether or not a woman is at risk of dying from the disease.

Clearly, the study has significant implications for the development of more targeted treatment options in the future and possibly the development of new drugs to fight the disease.  Professor Carlos Caldas from Cancer Research UK, one of the lead authors, said that the results of the research could pave the way in the future to diagnose the type of breast cancer a woman has, the types of drugs that will work, and those that won't, in a much more precise way than is currently possible.
