Those in the airline and tourism industry have called for a review of APD given the harmful impact it has on tourism.  APD applies to all flights from a UK airport, both domestic and international.  This means that not only are UK residents required to pay the highest level of APD in Europe when jetting off abroad, but internationals heading out of the UK on the return leg of a flight are also charged the hefty tax.  Bookings from Australia and New Zealand to the UK are reported to be down 25 and 26 per cent respectively compared to 2011, despite the suggestion 2012 will be a bumper year for the UK tourism industry with the Queen's Jubilee and the Olympics.

The highest bracket of APD is £92 per passenger for flights of over 6000 miles, up from £55 in November 2009.

Does APD put you off travelling abroad?  Perhaps you do not notice the tax and put increased costs in air travel down to a general rise in airline prices and fuel charges?  Or have you or your business been affected by a downturn in UK tourism caused by the rise in APD?  If you feel passionately about petitioning the Government for a decrease in APD or if you simply want to see the cost of international and domestic air travel brought back in line with the rest of Europe then you may want to consider signing up to The Telegraph's e-petition
