Now, even if you have not booked a traditional package holiday, the money you pay for your travel arrangements will be protected if one of the companies you have booked with goes bust. Equally, if you are abroad when the travel company goes bust then arrangements will be made by the Civil Aviation Authority to fly you home as planned at no extra cost.

This article from The Telegraph usefully summarises the extension of ATOL protection and how it will work in practice. From October, consumers will be provided with a standard certificate confirming their travel arrangements have ATOL protection.

Notably, flight only bookings made with airlines are not included in the changes. It is hoped the Government may extend protection to such bookings following the Civil Aviation Bill which is currently going through Parliament, but there is no guarantee this will happen.

The extension of ATOL financial protection is excellent news for consumers given the boom in non-traditional, so-called dynamic, package holidays in the late nineties.
