The man has been ordered to serve a minimum of 17 1/2 years minus time spent on remand. A Serious Case Review commissioned by local social services concluded that there were "numerous missed opportunities" in relation to the son and "concern that no professional ever saw him in the family home."

Most if not all local authorities will have at least one case of this nature occurring within their area each year.
