a very interesting article on the need for traffic lights in the BBC Magazine which puts forward the argument that instead of reliance on traffic lights we should replace this by using common sense." />

Statistics show the latest annual figures for deaths and serious injury on the road in the UK in a year to be 24,500; the annual cost estimate for dealing with this number of accidents is between £15bn and £32bn. The author, Martin Cassini, is of the view that most accidents are not accidents but events contrived by the rules and design of the road.

I agree that when approaching green traffic lights one tends to watch the light rather than the road and having to make a quick decision as to whether to slow down or speed up in case the light change can have disastrous consequences. The latest audit from Westminster City Council has shown that 44% of personal injury accidents occurred at traffic lights.

Mr Cassini started a campaign Equality Streets which is aimed at making the road fit for people by letting human nature take its competent and co-operative course.

I would urge you all to read the article as not only is it a good read but it makes you think!
