These findings are based on a research in high-risk workers such as miners, railway workers and truck drivers and it is thought that people working in such at-risk industries have about a 40% increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Diesel exhausts have previously been labelled as 'probably carcinogenic to humans',  however the scientific evidence of the Working Group's conclusion was unanimous.

The UK Department of Health has said that they will carefully consider the report as air pollutants are a significant public health concern and they are looking at improving public health.

The director of cancer information Dr Lesley Walker said that overall the number of lung cancers caused by diesel fumes was "likely to be a fraction of those caused by smoking tobacco".
