Anabolic steroids are manufactured drugs which mimic the male sex hormone testosterone and are taken by some athletes and body builders to build up muscle bulk and decrease fat. However, there are a variety of side effects, both related to the drug itself and through the act of injecting it into the body.  Side effects of anabolic steroid use can be both physical and psychological and include raised blood pressure, heart attack, shrunken testicles, infertility, problem periods, blood clots and mood swings to name but a few.  Worryingly, addiction can also occur and side effects on withdrawal of the drug is common.

Anabolic steroids are prescription-only drugs. They are also class C drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act, which means it is an offence to supply them.  To find out more about this and where to seek help you think you may be at risk of becoming addicted to anabolic steroids, click here.
