An article online caught my eye today as it involved the sad death of a man locally in Southsea.

On Sunday last a 26 year old local resident, believed to be from Lithuania, died after crashing into a post whilst participating in land surfing.  I haven't heard of this before and it apparently involves strapping your feet to a surfboard on wheels.  The man suffered head injuries after hitting a post in the car park of the D-Day Museum.  He had not been wearing a helmet.  He was taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital and placed on a life support machine but sadly died from his injuries.

I agree with the comments made by David Walker, leisure safety manager for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accident, in the article.  Land surfing can be a dangerous sport and participants should be advised to join a club to learn the skills of the sport and wear protective gear so as to avoid injury.

I hope that others learn from this sad story.
