Already this summer, there have been 13 incidents abroad involving falls from balconies. 3 of those incidents have resulted in deaths while others have seen Brits seriously injured.  Most falls from balconies involve young people in the 18-35 year old bracket.  Often, alcohol plays a part in the tragedy.

It is important to fully familiarise yourself with your surrounds when you first arrive on holiday, including the balcony and access to it from your hotel room.  Do not take any unnecessary risks.  Most of the reported cases could have been avoided if those involved had stopped for a split second and thought twice before acting.

No one expects young people to head off on their party holiday and avoid alcohol altogether when abroad.  The important thing is to consume alcohol in moderation and avoid getting into a state where your judgment is impaired to a level which becomes dangerous.  It is worth bearing in mind that many travel insurers will not provide cover for medical expenses or an air ambulance/ flights home where the holidaymaker has acted recklessly or alcohol and drugs are the real cause of any injuries.
