The Director of major trauma at Southampton General Hospital, Dr Andy Eynon, said that this would save lives as well as taxpayers' money, as each time a cyclist is seriously injured it costs in the region of £25,000.  In addition, cycle helmets offer vital protection to the brain.  Dr Eynon goes on to say that it is recognised that not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle, not wearing a seatbelt, as well as driving whilst using a mobile phone, are all accepted as being irresponsible and it was time that not wearing a cycle helmet was seen in the same light.

In response to this the Southampton Cycling Campaign supports the view that forcing people to wear helmets is not the solution and their spokesman said "It would make it more dangerous on the road and instantly reduce the amount of people cycling".
