Louise Silverton, RCM deputy general secretary, said: ‘The RCM would encourage midwives to have the vaccination to help protect the young babies that they care for.' By the end of June this year, a total to 2466 case of whooping cough had been reported, compared to just 311 in the same period in 2011. Surges in the number of whooping-cough cases are seen every three to four years and the current outbreak began at the end of 2011. Employers plan to make it easier for health care workers to have the vaccine due to difficulties with shift work patterns.

Is this the start of a number of vaccines that health care workers dealing with babies under three months will have to consider? If it protects babies and the staff are happy to have such vaccinations, it is hoped that this measure will reduce the number of new whooping cough cases notified.
