On browsing the travel press this week it seems that the cost of holidaying and travelling abroad is high on the agenda. If you're thinking of travelling to Moscow (unlikely perhaps but you never know) then you can expect to fork out for the highest priced hotel rooms in the world.

Moscow is followed by Geneva and Lagos in Nigeria.  It seems that high hotel prices go hand in hand with destinations popular with business travel.  The high price of hotel rooms in Lagos is thought to be caused by business related trips due to the oil industry.  For a bargain, check out some of the popular European destinations including Barcelona, Madrid and Dublin where prices have dipped.

Perhaps you don't plan to travel abroad at all this year, making the most of a staycation.  Earlier this week, passenger interest groups held protests at the annual rise in train fares.  It comes as no surprise to me that travelling by aeroplane can be cheaper in up to 50 per cent of cases.

In other news Brits are doing what they do best and complaining about the top holiday rip-offs.  The cost of sunbed hire and food and drink top the charts.  The key of course is to choose your holiday destination carefully to ensure you get the best exchange rates and avoid the tourist traps.  On the other hand, you may take the view that your annual summer holiday is for enjoying and not worry too much about the cost of it all - choosing instead to just have a good time!  Or maybe you do both - have a good time and then whinge about how much it all cost when you get home.

Wherever you are holidaying this summer, and whatever the cost along the way, stay safe and remember to observe our top holiday tips.
