The Police in Berlin who have had these boxes installed since 2010 report that accidents in these cars have reduced by 35% which has convinced Parliament to act.

The boxes similar to those used by airplanes and shipping, will gather information from sensors located on the vehicle as to speed, use of brakes and lights and will store the details in the time leading up to and following an accident.

There is opposition from the German Auto Drivers Association that the scheme is expensive and the data may pose a risk to privacy and could be used against drivers by the police authorities.
